EXPLOSIVE AND ENTHRALLING ROMANTASY DEBUT FROM NEW YORK TIMESBESTSELLING AUTHOR RACHEL HOWZELL HALL ...
Thrown into a desolate land of sickness and unnatural beasts, Kai wakes in the woods with no idea who she is or how she got there. All she knows is that if she cannot reach the Sea of Devour, even this hellscape will get worse.
But when she sees the village blacksmith fight invaders with unspeakable skill, she decides to accept his offer of help.
Too bad he's as skilled at annoying her as he is at fighting.
As she searches for answers, Kai only finds more questions, especially regarding the blacksmith who can ignite her body like a flame, then douse it with ice in the next breath.
And no one is what—or who—they appear to be in the kingdom of Vinevridth, including the man whose secrets might be as deadly as the land itself.

Tamika Katon-Donegal narrates this fantasy, the first in a series. From the moment Kai wakes up in the woods with amnesia and discovers her belongings have been looted, life becomes a struggle. With the help of a gorgeous man who, suspiciously, seems too skilled at swordplay to be stuck in such a remote town, Kai hopes to regain her memories. Narrating quickly, Katon-Donegal delivers each line in a rhythmic cadence that complements the often-stilted sentences, giving her narration the feel of slam poetry at times. Her unmatched energy keeps one listening to the mediocre writing. Inner monologues and spoken dialogue are hard to tell apart and could use more distinction. S.S. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

Hall (What Never Happened) launches a new series with this thrilling romantasy. Kai awakens in a forest near Maford in the kingdom of Vinevridth with no memory of who she is or where she came from. After her pendant and clothes are stolen by a thief named Olivia, she tracks the woman into town, where the pair brawl, causing a commotion and destroying property. Kai is forced to pay damages with manual labor before she’s allowed to leave. Until then, she must stay with Olivia and her enigmatic brother, Jadon. As she settles into her new home, hazy memories of magic return to her and her attraction to Jadon grows. But when the angry goddess Elyn swoops into town hunting for Kai, she and her new friends are forced to flee—and hope to finally discover who Kai is and what the goddess wants from her. The mystery of Kai’s identity propels the plot forward (though readers will have to wait for future installments for answers), while electrifying fight scenes, otherworldly creatures, and sizzling forbidden romance add fun. Romantasy readers won’t be able to turn the pages fast enough.
